This test should be considered if the child in question is a female and the mother is not available for the test, but another relative from the mother’s side of the family is available, such as an aunt or grandmother. Mitochondrial occur in both males and females, through the maternal lineage.
Significant common uses for this test are maternal kinship studies, maternity testing, sibling studies from the same mother, grand maternity testing from the same grandmother, forensic casework (to analyze sample material that is not suitable for nuclear DNA testing, hair testing without the hair root, and skeletal testing), and genealogy studies.
