It is important to note that the DNA self-collection method, if done correctly, yields the same
accuracy as a DNA blood test would yield. The self-collection method using buccal swabs
inside the mouth against the cheeks is simple and painless.
Our laboratories use the buccal swabs from which the DNA material is easily extracted,
then run highly accurate DNA testing, as established by the American Association of Blood
Banks (AABB) – the highest DNA testing standards possible.
Both the paternity and maternity DNA tests, if the testing material is adequate, can prove
with a 100% exclusion rate that a tested individual is NOT the biological father or mother of
a tested child (the “exclusion”). However, no DNA test thus far can prove with true 100%
accuracy that a tested child is the child of a tested man or woman.
What current DNA testing will show is the probability that a tested man or woman is the
parent of a tested child. And the probability ratings yield results of 99.9% certainty – well
above the average court acceptance of 99%. Therefore, in simpler terms, if you provide our
lab with good samples, you will get results that will tell you that the tested child is the child of
a particular tested woman or man, up to a 99.9% probability, or, the tested child is not the
child of a tested man or woman, with a 100% exclusion rate.
These highly accurate and high exclusion and inclusion test result numbers are why courts,
the world-over, accept DNA testing as solid proof of a paternity or maternity question.
Because of natural genetic make-up of the world’s races, race does have a determining
factor with the results of any DNA test group. This is why it is very important that you
correctly and accurately answer the race related questions on the form that will accompany
the buccal swabs to the lab. The lab will use that information in setting up certain filters
while running the test. Additionally, the power of the DNA test is somewhat lower in
situations of mixed race children, but will normally generate a probability of 99.0% or
greater. This is also particularly true when either the alleged mother or alleged father is
unavailable for testing.
